Tuesdays were the only night our library stayed open late, so I made it a priority to offer a consistent family program on those evenings. The third Tuesday of every month became something families could count on: Family Bingo Night.

And it quickly became a HUGE crowd pleaser.

Providing one free, predictable evening out each week gave families something reliable to build into their schedules. Consistency is key in library programming—when families know something happens regularly, they show up. Over time, Family Bingo became a tradition.

How We Structured the Night

We played five rounds of bingo, with two winners per round. The first 4 games were regular bingo (five across or diagonal), and the last game was a blackout. Between rounds, we played music, highlighted upcoming library programs, and built in simple themed activities. The energy stayed high, and there was never downtime long enough for little ones to get restless.

Prizes were mostly donated. I put out community call-outs and created an Amazon wishlist, and the response was great! Families, local businesses, and groups often love supporting something so well attended and loved.

Our Teen Advisory Board (TAB) members volunteered each month, which made a huge difference. They helped pass out supplies, check cards, call numbers, and run activities. It also gave teens meaningful leadership opportunities.

Themed Each Month (Because Themes Make Everything Better)

Each Family Bingo Night had a theme, complete with coordinating snacks and simple activities. Themes kept the program feeling fresh while the structure stayed the same.

Some favorites:

  • Bluey & Bingo Night – We played Keepy Uppy between rounds and played Bluey music. And, of course, we dressed up.

  • Lunar New Year – Families practiced picking up pom-poms with chopsticks and made paper lanterns.

  • Halloween – Kids were invited to wear costumes (always a highlight).

  • Christmas Season – A TAB member dressed as the Grinch, and we played the Grinch soundtrack throughout the night.

The possibilities are endless—seasonal themes, book characters, cultural celebrations, school spirit nights, decades themes, and more.

Why This Program Works

  • It’s multi-generational.

  • It’s low-cost.

  • It’s easy to replicate.

  • It builds community.

  • It feels special without being complicated.

Most importantly, it provides a free night out for families. Libraries are one of the few spaces left where families can gather without financial barriers. Creating an evening that feels festive, welcoming, and consistent sends a powerful message: you belong here.

Basic Supplies

We used this website for our number caller.

Prizes can be small and simple—stickers, donated gift cards, books, small toys, or themed goodies (we often let the kids keep the themed stamps).

Family Bingo Night became more than a program. It became part of our rhythm. When we offer predictable, joyful experiences, families begin to rely on the library not just as a place to check out books—but as a place to build memories.

*This blog is intentionally ad-free. I want it to be a clean, distraction-free space where public librarians can find practical ideas for youth services, outreach, and programming without pop-ups or sponsored clutter.

Some posts may include affiliate links for books or supplies I genuinely use and recommend. If you choose to purchase through those links, I may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. It’s a simple way to support the work while getting materials for your own programs.
